Internet Service Providers Review – Starcomms Nigeria

by Rich Kid on September 6, 2008

(Note: We are starting with starcomms Nigeria today. We will surely discuss other internet service provides too – both dial up and broadband internet services providers.

When I first subscribe to starcomms Nigeria internet service (specifically cdma – a.k.a dial-up) few years ago I didn’t experience any difficulty with the activation of my service. If I can remember, everything was almost instant. I wasn’t told to wait for 48hrs before my account can be activated.

Unfortunately, that has changed.

Few weeks back, after listening to izap promotions severally I decided to try the service despite the fact that I am still subscribed to ipnx broadband service. I made the payment at their toyin street office, got the package and was told to wait for 48hrs for my account to be active.

Friend, I was so anxious to test the service out to the extent that I wanted to connect it before the 48hrs. Eventually, the 48th our came I gave it a try and was disappointed. It was late in the night. Next day I called their customer care and was redirected to ‘data service’ centre. The person that picked the call wasted my time asking series of questions. At the end of the ‘interrogation’ he told me to wait for some hours more.

To cut the chase, 48hrs becomes 192hrs (8days) before I got my izap account activated.

Two of our subscriber have experience same thing. As a mater of fact I got call from one of them this morning. He has been trying to have his account activated for days. The funny aspect of it now is that his account is not even a new account.

Rating:-

On scale of 1 to 10 I will give them 2 for customer care because it’s suck.

Quality of starcomms internet service:

  • I don’t see much difference between their izap evdo services and 1x. My expectation before buying it was that I should be able to enjoy fast speed from their evdo while in office since my office is in ikeja (precisely on allen avenue) not too far from starcomms ikeja office. But unfortunately, it’s not that different from 1x that I use at home.
  • Their internet connection breaks a lot both on izap evdo and 1x.
  • Can’t even watch online video on izap evdo.
  • I think it is still manageable compare to two other services we’ve tested.

On scale of 1 to 10 I will give starcomms 6 for internet connection speed. However, I believe they have all it takes to improve on the quality of their services.

I wish they improve on time before they start loosing customer to competitors because then they will know that their being first 3g provider and first to be listed on stock exchange will not help them.

What has been your experience with starcomms Nigeria service?
Can you please comment and at the same time rate them on scale of 1 to 10.

My experience with Starcomms has been quite frustrating especially when
i paid at their designated bank Zenith for the internet sevice sometimes in
August last year and all my efforts to make them connect my internet facility
proved abortive as they claimed the N5000 i personally paid into their account did not reflect. I was forced to pay another N5000 after about 3 weeks of my waiting to be re connected without any result. I am still hoping that
this issue will be resolved since i am not ready to forgo my hard earn money
to them.

Dear sir/Ma,

I hereby write to complain of my displeasure at the current charges by Starcomms for an un-available service.

I subscribed to Starcomms internet service using the 1xEVDO Aircard here in Kano, Only to be find out later that I am paying N6500/100 hours for the same service that is given to those using the 1x Card (N5000 per month). I have since complained to the Service centre here in Kano that I desire to change from the EVDO to 1x; this I was told is not possible. Hence I have wasted N4500 extra for the past 3 month now for a service that you do not have available to offer yet.

I have met a couple of people who share the same grieviance with me on this issue. We all see this as unfair. We might have to migrate to your competitiors but before then we felt it was proper to formally notify you before any of us will put it in black and white on the Nigeria News Papers directing it to NCC.

We desire you promptly look into this as we all believe that if you have made N4500 on each us for a service you did not render, that will cummulate into Billions for the whole Nigerian popolase.

Hence, we peacefully desire that you address this issue ASAP

OHIOZOKHAI July 16, 2009 at 8:38 am

Starcomms Customer services is the worst iv ever ever ever come across in my entire life. I visited lagos from london. Went to their Toyin Street Ikeja office to subscribe and I must say, Iv never ever ever seen staff so moody, unfriendly and unpleasant. I subscribed for one month and I tell you The internet connection sucks. I certainly cant wait for this month to run out. and will never ever in my entire life renew it, or ever recommend anyone to join them. Il be joining multilinks as iv used multilinks on friends laptops and the connection is amazing

Rashheed shittu October 15, 2009 at 11:21 am

i have been using the 1x usb services since june 2009 and i must confess i have not been enjoying the service even at the moment i am thinking of changing the network becos its really affecting my business

Obilor October 31, 2009 at 1:18 pm

I must say that i am disappointed with starcomms internet service[izap] when it comes to the range of things i was hoping to do with internet when i subscribed to it. I was hoping to be able to watch you tube, make skype calls and browse facebook but that hope was dashed on so many occasions. The internet service keeps on breaking up when i am on skype making the conversation very frustrating. With you tube the story is even worse in that i’ve not been able to watch a single video from you tube since i started using starcomms. With facebook, the browser is very slow making it impossible to upload any picture. The services i get to enjoy with starcomms are checking my e-mail and google search. Even then the speed at times could be very slow. On a rating of 1-10, i will rate them 2 and 4 with regards to connection speed and customer care respectively. I hope they will improve the quality of their services soon or else i will look for another provider.

Oluwole Olalekan December 18, 2009 at 3:05 pm

Can someone please tell me what is wrong with the Starcomms Internet Network? I have experienced nightmare with their network for the past 3-4 days now. Even after following the directives of their useless, stupid and rude guys in their customer service nothing seem to happen. I have been using this EVDO 580 Watcher Internet Card for about 2-3years now and this is the first time I will experience such frustration that has not been resolved for days now.

Their customer care don’t even know the meaning of “CUSTOMER CARE”, they are very rude and dump………..most of the time they don’t even end up solving issues for their customers. Please can anyone let us know what if this same issue is experienced on Starcomms Network.

I will be glad to get a solution to this very slow and epileptic network issue on the starcomms network

Oluwole

Rich Kid December 18, 2009 at 4:52 pm

Oluwole,

I’ve not had any problem with my starcomms
connection for long now. Though I use genie.

Personally, I’ve had good experience with starcomms
customer care. May be I’ve been always fortunate.

I will advice that you contact their customer care
again if you are still experiencing problem.

You may be fortunate to talk to correct guy.

My experience with starcomms can be described as eclectic…i can’t understand why it would take them longer than 24hrs max to activate your internet after payment has been made.
I think the night browsing is their worst package cos you call the office and they keep lying to you that it will be activated and by midnight when you are up to browse, it is down and they always succeed in messing your plans.

paul February 13, 2010 at 3:09 pm

its good

Ayodeji February 14, 2010 at 7:20 pm

I guess its high time we Nigerians wise-up to these scams called “BroadBand in Nigeria”. It does not exist or how else do you explain “broadband” that promises you 2MB upload or 2oMB download and your download is reading something like 3.6KB (Kilobytes!)? What can you do with that kind of bandwidth?
Hardly will you be able to open your E-mail without tears, with such bandwidth yet these scammers charge us all sorts of thousands of naira and fail to deliver on the contract!
Where is NCC and all those Consumer Protection outfits?
While l will not ” too much” blame a thief for attempting to rob me twice in a day, l will blame the “law enforcers” who are paid with my tax-payer’s money, to arrest such thief BUT FAIL TO DO SO. NCC is the enforcer here.
President Goodluck Jonathan has to urgently look into this “Broadband and Communications SCAM” that is ruining business and productivity in this country. If they can not achieve what they advertise then they must stop advertising it (such) and REFUND PEOPLE’S MONEY.

The truth is that their current level of infrastructure cannot produce/supply what they are promising (they are no better than Dial-Up, at best) and they know this but still go about enetering into contract with a client, promising to deliver such bandwidth allowance. THAT IS A BUSINESS SCAM, end of story. Though lets be honest, what do we expect from a country that cannot provide 3hrs of uninterrupted electricity in one day, in most locality? While l appreciate that the “operating cost” of these communications company are huge, (they have to literally operate their own “city”) Honesty, respect for customer’s loyalty and customer retention makes it mandatory that they should be truthful about the service level they can render.
Operating cost might increase cost of services BUT it does not and should not eliminate integrity in doing business and its a shame that almost all these Communication companies are just scamming subscribers.
How about if we form a “Consumer Association” specifically against Broadband/Communications scams (especially those who have proof of these scams; you can use “Speedtest” free software to check what you’re getting at different locations and time of day and keep the screen-shots as evidence) and institute a “Class Action” against them, using lawyers amongst us, to represent us?
As we all know, this is Nigeria and this scam would continue forever, if nothing is done about it. It’s just like when “Nepa” used to collect bills for supplying ‘darkness’ but now that we have “Pre-paid Meters”, there is no longer “free-lunch” and they are now hoarding those pre-paid meters (they now prefer to issue Bill, as usual!) so that they can come and harass you for Bill and take bribes (who wants to pay for services not rendered?) when you refuse to pay!

Nigerians generally are ‘too docile and too selfish” to sacrifice even one hour of their time, to demand for justice and fair treatment. This is what “others” are capitalizing on: They can never speak with one voice, they will say!

I am willing to sacrifice my time, energy and resources on this issue and l want to call on others too to rally-round and kick-start something; Needless to say, l enjoy 24hrs x7 10MB broadband where l live, so l am not doing it for the sake of myself but for the sake of all the people whose complaint l have read here and elsewhere.
Remember, “Evil triumph, where a few good men (and women) remain silent in the face of tyranny”..
Thank you.
Deji.
