How times flies? It was just about this time last year that our own Rich Kid, Lateef Olajide was honoured as the young entrepreneur of the year 2007. An event that left those of us that were actually present inspired.

Behold! It’s 2008 and as it has been a practice for the award to be held towards the end of each year, that of this year was no exception as the award took place on Saturday the 8th of November.

A BRIEF LOOK AT THE EVENT

As this year’s award took place, all roads led to the Lagos Sheraton Hotel & Suites where the event was schedule to hold. Present at the event were readers of SuccessDigest Extra, members of SuccessDigest leaders club, members of Successful Entrepreneurs Network (SEN), members of the Board of the organization, friends and well wishers of the awardees and that of Complete Communications, publishers of SuccessDigest and Complete Sports.

Among the many personalities who graced the award ceremony were well known clerics like Bishop Moses, Bishop Geroge Amu and Pastor Ehimika Emmanuel.

At about 2.15, with many of the guest and participants seated, the anchor for the event finally took to the podium. He called for the opening prayers after which Dr. Sunny Obazu-Ojeagbase, the President/founder of Success Attitude Development Center, organizers of the award, gave his welcome address.

The time finally came for the award proper. One after the other the awardees were called upon to be honoured. Among the awardees were great entrepreneurs who have contributed immensely to the economic growth of our great country, Nigeria. They include Dipo Davies, Publisher/CEO, Castles Magazine, Mrs. Ibidun Ituah-Ighodalo, CEO, Elizabelt-R, Mrs Tara Fela-Durotoye, CEO, House of Tara, Mr. Sunny Elem, MD/CEO, Wealth Team Networks, Mrs. Betty Irabor, Editor-in-chief, Genevieve Magazine,

Also awarded were Mr. Oluwasanmi Akindipe MD/CEO, Set Consultant Service, Mr. Gbeminiyi Oluwabusola, MD, Techclick Limited,(link), Mr. Tajudeen Adepetu, MD/CEO, Consolidated Media Associates Limited, Paul Oluwabanjo, MD/CEO, Webpower Continental Services.

One of the highlights of the event, that might have probably brought many SENetworkers to the event was the Raffle draws in which Mr. Kenneth Omoregbe won the 1st prize of the (KIA PICANTO CAR) while Kalu Peace won the 2nd prize of ($500,000) worth of shares. The 3rd price was won by Abikoye Joseph, making him the proud owner of a brand new laptop.

Apart from the winners of the raffle draws, also rewarded were three Other SENetworkers who were said to have been able to register more people into the network.

In between the presentations of awards and rewards, was a short drama pieces, traditional dance, musical stage performance which was performed by the combined SuccessDigest Leaders’ Club (SDLC) and Aity Inyang Band. Pastor Ehimika Emmanuel also gave a brief motivational talk. All these made the event a very entertaining and memorable ceremony.

The award been the 12th of its kind finally came to an end after the vice president, Pastor (Mrs.) Esther Obazu-Ojeagbase gave the vote of thanks while Bishop Amu said the closing prayers. At this junction I must say that the event was more organized than the previous ones.

I therefore use this opportunity to say well done to the organization and to let them know that we are expecting more improvement come next year and to the recipients of this years award as well as to the winner of SENetwork rewards, I say a big Congratulation.

LESSONS FOR ALL
The award organized by the publishers of SuccessDigest Extra with the vision of discovering, encouraging and honouring exceptional entrepreneurs in Nigeria was yet another success and inspiration to many.

As an entrepreneur, business person, internet marketer, information marketer and/or success minded fellow, this I know for sure is a time of the year when most of us reflect on what we might have achieved and what we might have not.

Dear friend, why it may not be surprising that many of us struggle very hard to achieve success. There are still quite a number of people who make it to the top and become very popular just like those who had just been honoured.

There is also these other group of people who seems to get tired along the line only to give up their precious dreams; they are always complaining about how hard it is to learn new things and how difficult it is to get along. They seem to have every reason why things don’t work.

Before you decide which group you belong to and which you might want to stitch to, let take a look at what the awardees had in common. During the award ceremony, while the awardees stood, waiting to be honoured, a short video clip of an interview that probably took place in their individual offices, about their journey to success was shown to the participants of the event. They were all inspiring.

What the awardees had in common.

1) They are Entrepreneur who saw and took hold of opportunity.

2) They had challenges/failures at some point in time.

3) They had setbacks which they actually took as stepping stones.

4) They all have a story to tell. This is what I call “the Story behind the Glory”.

5) They did not get their over night.

6) They refuse to accept defeat. One shocking example was what Mr. Sunny Elem, MD/CEO, Wealth Team Networks said during his interview. He said there was a time when he had to sleep in a bus. Who could ever think that such a superstar, once had to sleep in a bus, if he had not told the story himself?

I have only named a few of what they had in common, if you were at the event you might want to add your own observation.

Dear reader, I decided to share this with you today, to encourage and motivate you just as the event had motivated those of us who were present.

I believe that success in life and business is built over time and for those of us who are internet marketer, I want you to know that, it takes one skill at a time to get there.

When you start out, you likely start by learning how to pick a niche market that has buyers. You also get to learn how to do keyword research, how to go about blogging, writing and submission of articles, etc.

Like I wrote in one of my past articles tittled Internet Marketing: The learning curve. “As you advance, you might begin to see the need to learn HTML, graphic design, web design, copywriting…Remember it’s a continuous process so don’t be in a hurry to get it all at the start…”

Yes, you can’t dive at it all at once; rather you might choose to learn something like keyword research this week, next week or there about you decide to learn blogging and so on. One thing you will also want to consider is the amount of time you are willing to spend on a daily/weekly basis.

Why it’s no lies that some people succeed in whatever they do due to genius. I have come to discover that the best and surest way to be successful is by learning and doing what is to be done. Just make sure you draw a line between learning and doing. Don’t wait to learn everything before you set out.

…Keeping learning …keep doing. That is one of the secret of successful people.

Before I bring this article to an end, I want to bring this to your notice; one of the major causes of failure is impatient. You see, majority are guilty of impatient. I am likewise guilty of it. We all need to learn to be patient.

When it comes to money and success we want to see results right away but we can afford to go to school for so many years, most times starting from nursery school up to the university all for the sake of a degree.

Dear friend, the truth is unless you have so much money, influence to get you success or maybe you somehow get hold of a wonder working charm (that is if there is one) you will have to work out whatever is it you want to be successful at and it surely does take some time.

Finally, I want to say to you, Dare! Dare!! Dare!!! That’s life for you. If this ones could do it, you should carry their story every where you go, let it bring you the feeling that you can do it, especially when the storms come ragging.

This world is a very interesting place, no wonder many make out of it whatsoever they desire.

When information flies around, one of the best things I do is to accept it. Mind you I never said believe it. This date with LATEEF OLAJIDE (Nigeria fastest rising internet marketing Rich Kid) was prompted based on three fold point.

Namely:-  Making money without spending money.

Making money marketing information.

Rich Dad hosts Rich Kid.

Garnishing all these three points was a technical jargon coming to me for the first time ever PIGGYBACK.

I was fascinated by point number three. Rich Dad hosts Rich Kid. Though no mention was made of Robert Kiyosaki of Rich Dad Poor Dad visiting Nigeria on the 19th of June 23, 2008. however, it turned out to be a home grown version made in Lagos Nigeria. When information comes to me like this, I don’t naturally keep quiet. I went ahead of time to discuss the issue with my friend who introduced me to SENetworkers. He did a good job in his bid to put me through but I never understood him. I wanted to see it live and do the autopsy myself.

Never was the event a banquet of eulogy nor was it a talk show, it was an entrepreneurial seminar! At the event venue, a unique place, Four Square Gospel Church Esuola Street Okota Lagos Nigeria, I the doubting Thomas meet the risen Christ. Just like any other event around the corner, formalities for registration looked discouraging but I told myself I must see the end of the matter.  An icing on the cake that tantalized me was the event tag inscribed with a Chinese language. I never understood what was written on it but I felt like others, took a seat having begged a few young men to accommodate me in their already filled pew. The journey has begun!

When the young man LATEEF OLAJIDE mounted the podium, I was eager to download him and print him out in my own language. I must be frank with you I was never disappointed. He was a perfect captain fantastique. Though he confirmed of not having attended any higher institution but the society known to him calls him a professor. Now I can understand better, he has all it takes to show for it. Certificates are not all that there is.

As I said earlier that I was impressed, let me flash you a bit of it all in a summary. He started the day with why people fail in most of their chosen field of endeavour.

And what is it? Lack of fundamentals and our inability to think and change when most needed. He talked about money nay millions with much gusto. The thrilling aspect was that he talks in all world major currencies.

Some of his clichés are:-

•         I care about the zeros, the more the better

•         Lastly, always think win/win

If this young man based his personal mantra on those mention points, one must not wonder why he is referred to as the Rich Kid by the Don himself Dr. Obazu-Ojeagbase. Its not amazing to me any longer why he owns a good line products, wonderful matrics and a classic team. And where is his farmland? PIGGYBACK!

And so, what is PIGGYBACK? Its just a careful usage, call it leverage on other peoples work to create your own unique product both online and offline. But for the Rich Kid its an online affair.

Now how did he perfect his own? He wrote a book  and sold it via the internet. Do you understand? About what to be precise? Just DOGS! Yes common dogs,sold it on the world wide web, meet people, made money and become the Rich Kid. Don’t forget he is selling information. Too simple? Good thinking good product.

When he quoted Archimedes principle which says give me a lever strong enough and a place to stand and I will move the world, I knew he is currently standing on giant achievers shoulders. Having robbed minds with the great minds, the rob off is quite visible. He is among the gurus. He did not start from class one, he combined and leveraged on what others have already done and got his products. Such information is free but not 100% cheap, he studied and researched.

Now I can understand why I can make money without money. Writing have never been a problem for me. I will join this club.

Everything around us has the potential of being turned to GOLD only if we can look at it differently from what the normal norm use to be.

Q:  I’m starting a small business.  How do I go about finding a management team and locating qualified employees?

A:  Whoa! — If you were to come into my office and ask that question, I would have a ho’bunch of questions for you before I could even begin to answer. — What kind of business?  Tell me all about the product or service?  Where will the business be located?  What is your background?  What are your financial strengths and weaknesses? etc., etc., etc.

If you are looking for a management team, your business is either very sophisticated - or - you just want someone else to do the work for you; while you pull the strings and make the profit.

Assuming that your business is sophisticated enough to need a management team, you can find good management teams advertising in the trade publications for your industry.  Once you employ one of those management teams, they will locate and employ the qualified employees to operate the business.

If, on the other hand, you are just looking for someone to do the work for you, I heartily suggest you get a JOB and stay out of the business community … there are already too many ne’er-do-wells pretending to be business people.

Q:   Who are your business heroes and why?

A:  My heroes are like my mistakes and failures … I couldn’t count them with all of fingers, toes and hairs on my chest.

I am forever in awe of people who succeed in business … any kind of business … from the local Mom & Pop grocery store to the mega-corporate types.

Any one who succeeds in business is my hero.

Q:  What do we need to learn to become business minded people?

A:  Hey … I ain’t got the time to write a thousand pages.

The main thing a wannabee MUST first do is attempt to lose their “consumer” mentality.  That means they must give up their attitudes about privacy, security and “the evils of making money.”

To succeed in any business, you must be willing to give up your privacy and rely solely upon yourself for your security. — You MUST let your customers know who you are … not just a fictitious email address … and where they can find you.  Otherwise, you are only playing at being in business.

Learn to respect “money,” in all its forms and embrace the fact that “making money” is NOT evil - but - there are some evil people who make a lot of money.  By and large, MOST people who make a lot of money are far more honest than the customers they serve.

Q:  What businesses would you recommend staying away from?  How can I spot an illegitimate offer?

A:  Who is the ugliest woman in the world? — Depends on who’s looking, doesn’t it?

As I have said before, there are millionaires in every imaginable business - so - if a business interests you, pursue it.

How do you spot an illegitimate offer? — To which the learned gurus would respond, “If it sounds too good to be true, it is.”

There are as many legitimate businesses that sound too good to be true as there are illegitimate ones. - Why? - Because, most beginning business people are still thinking like consumers.  They don’t yet know the real facts about business, so they dismiss legitimate business opportunities because they simply don’t understand the business of business.

For example:  Would you believe it if I told you that “passive” earnings of 3% to 7% PER DAY were possible? — Too good to be true? — But, it happens every day.  Then again, it doesn’t happen every day to the same person. — You can only do; maybe, 5 or 6 deals like that in a year’s time (it takes 30 to 60 days just to set up the deals) … even with the best sources and resources.  (I’ve done it more than once.)

That kind of offer would be known and acceptable in the International Forfaiting field … and those knowledgeable in that field would know it couldn’t be done every day - BUT - every day, con-men around the world are separating people from their hard earned money by promising those returns every day on every dollar invested.

You can’t tell the legitimate from the illegitimate in the business community until you fully understand the business of business as it really exists. — A knowledgeable money-man would know that the con-man’s offer was illegitimate because the money-man would also know that you can’t do a deal every day … even under the best circumstances.

The ONLY way you can protect yourself from illegitimate offers is by “knowing” the business of business.  That means losing your consumer mentality and studying the business or industry in which the opportunity may; or may not, exist.

Q:  How do I find joint venture partners and silent business partners?

A:  How do you find anything you want in business? — You “advertise” for it.

There is no big mystery about finding venture partners or silent partners.  You just advertise for them in the publications they read.

Every trade, industry, field of business endeavor and hobby has publications directed specifically to people who participate in those industries … the “best” are newsletters that; although very small in circulation, go to a very tight niche readership. — Get’em.  Read’em.  Then, advertise for the partners you need.

Q:  What are the most important parts of a business plan and how would I develop them?

A:  Whoops!  This question is a bit out of my field of knowledge.

Over the past 50 years, I have never found it necessary to write a business plan in order to interest investors.  I have bootstrapped all my businesses without financing. — SO …

I recommend you do a search on “business plans.” — I’ve read a number of good articles on the subject and remember receiving a FREE template for writing business plans from one of the Internet companies that provide business plan assistance.

By the way, although I have never written a formal business plan for any of my businesses, I ALWAYS have a written plan for doing any business in which I decide to get involved.

Q:  What would you say are 5 to 10 keys to your success in business & life?

A:  There are only two … study and testing.

No matter what business you attempt, you MUST study everything you can find on the subject of your business endeavor.  Then, you MUST test every method, concept and technique in that business until you find what works for you.

For example:  When I decided to go into the banking business, I bought over $3,000 worth of books on banking and the financial industry.  Read them cover to cover … all of them.  Then, I tested and retested methods to make my bank do what I envisioned it doing.

Another example:  When I got involved in gold mining, I bought copies of over $1,500 worth of gold processing patents; from the U.S. Patent Office.  Studied all of them until I had some ideas on how to get the gold from the placer deposits.  Then, I tested and retested those methods until I found one that worked.

Whatever you want to do in business, you MUST pay the price for your education.  You either pay for books on the subject, or you pay the price by cold, hard experience.  Then, no matter what you learn, you can only make it succeed if you test and retest what you have learned.

Q:  What online and offline companies/businesses do you use and admire?

A:  This is the kind of question that gets most beginners in trouble. - Why? - Because, all too often, beginners believe that, if they use the same resources as a successful person, they too will succeed.

Each person must make their decisions about what businesses, services, suppliers and/or vendors they will use for their business … based solely upon the value provided by the sources they choose.

For example:  Back in 1983, we went looking for a new typesetting system for our paper and ink publications.  We had been using the Compugraphics system … typesetting one line of type at a time; then retyping any errors, cutting & pasting them over the error. — Price quotes for a typesetting system with pagination were from $80,000 to $120,000. — Then I received information from one of my subscribers; Steve Jobs, telling me about the Aldus PageMaker that worked on his Macintosh computer. — The whole system cost me just over $20,000 … you can buy it today for less than $3,000 with a lot more bells & whistles. — SO …

You could say I use and admire the Apple Computers; with the new Adobe Pagemaker system and the fantastic PageMill website maker - but - that’s because they were the system I started with. — Would they be right for YOU … I don’t know.  It is, as always, a matter of perception.

Q:  What advice can you give the person who has “tried everything” but still can’t seem to put all of the pieces to the “success puzzle” together?

A:  Quit “trying” and start “doing.”

You can “try” to do something all your life and never get it done - but - when you quit “trying” and dedicate yourself; heart & soul, to doing it, you will succeed.

Pick just one thing.  Do it every day.  Test it every day.  Do it some more.  Test it some more.

Q:  The internet is maturing - it seems more difficult to find a niche and separate my site from others.  Are the opportunities for the small start-up disappearing?

A:  Back in the late 1800s … before automobiles & airplanes … it was decided to close the U.S. Patent Office, because, “Everything that can be invented has already been invented.”

Niche marketing is great - BUT - instead of trying to “niche” yourself into a marketing corner, try expanding your efforts to include others into your niche by either adapting your  product to a larger niche;  or finding another audience for your products outside your niche.

As an example …

When I wrote the report the report, “Get $1,000 - $5,000 Free & Clear Within 30 Days!,” it was directed toward people who needed some help with their financing. — Then, I started receiving notes like this one that I used in an ad campaign for it. — Here’s the actual email message I used …

Q:  What software tools do you use to automate your business?

A:  Actually, I use very, very few automation programs for my business - and - neither should you, unless you know for an absolute fact that those programs will benefit YOUR CUSTOMERS … not just your desire to get out of doing the work.

Until just a couple years ago, I did ALL of my Internet marketing on a 14.4K dial-up modem connection …  not because I wanted to but because that  was the only connection available out here in the woods. — I consider that one of the most fortunate problems I have ever encountered.

By only having a very show dial-up connection, I was forced by circumstances to devise ways to accomplish the things I needed to do in order to serve my only assets … MY CUSTOMERS.  That made me develop the best methods  to serve my customers.

When I did get faster dial-up connection, I found that the systems I had developed were far better than any  of the “automation” programs I could find.  Although the “automation” programs did “speed up” the process, they (in too many cases) abandoned my customers … making my customers no more than a series of email addresses; rather than the “real  people” my methods serve.

So … before you “automate” determine whether it will serve your customers or will it only serve your desire to get out of doing the work.

Q:  What standard of computer knowledge do you have to develop, to run a successful Internet business?

A:  Have you ever heard  it said, “A poor workman always blames his tools.”

When I started on the Internet, I  was just about as computer literate as an ol’yella cat.  Today, I know more than the cat and I  am constantly reading, studying and learning anything and everything I can about my tools …  my computer and the applications I need to make it do the job I  want to do.

Anyone with basic computer skills can run  a successful Internet business - but - those of us who are making the  big bucks are unceasingly studying and learning about the tools we  use  in our profession.

You’ll never know enough.

I have been able to discover my hobby, so what is next?

If that is the question in your mind don’t worry I will share few tips with you here to fulfill promise I made in my first article on Turn your hobby to money on internet.

The best thing you can do if you are seriously passionate about something is to actively be part of those people in your area of interest. Arsenal football fan did not need special lecture to know that it is a must he watch every matches that affect his football club and listen to success and failure of other teams. They know the best place to meet to discuss.

For you to know what is hot in your ‘hobby market’ you have to be part of the group. Actively participate in the discussion. It may cost you few bucks to do this offline, however, you can do it free on internet. All you have to look for is the forum that has to do with your hobby.

What is a forum?

Forum is a place where people of the same interest meet to share and discuss issues pertaining to their area of interest.

Online forums are also called discussion boards, discussion groups or online community.

If your hobby is in keeping dog you can check out ‘dog forum’ or dog discussion boards’ or ‘online dog community’.

You can get couple of forums in your hobby area by searching for it on google.com or yahoo.com however; today I will share with you a directory of online forums.

The directory is called - big boards - www.big-boards.com

On bigboards.com you will find list of forums on different topics. You will even be able to know how active this forum is because ‘big-boards’ provides data’s like number of members the forum has and number of post that has been made by other members of that forum. Those data’s will surely help you in making decision of best forum to visit.

Make list of forums in your hobby area, register with them and spend few hours a day for some days to know more on hot topics they are discussing.

Corey Rudl (RIP) shared his experience in one of his book on how he got a business idea that net him several hundred of thousands of dollars just by visiting internet forums on cars. At the end of the day he publish a book called ‘car secrets’.

I have been able to launch several successful products just from visiting forums and taking part in discussion on my area of interest ‘hobby’.

Few years ago I interviewed Jim F. Straw for one of my book. On Sunday (yesterday 9th of march) while at Sheraton hotel’s (lagos) lobby waiting for a US business partner (to be) I met the publisher of moneywise magazine Mr Ayo Arowolo.

Today while thinking about short “tips of the day” to send to you, I got call from godaddy.com. If you are a complete internet beginner you may not have heard about godaddy.com before now.

“GoDaddy.com is the world’s No. 1 ICANN-accredited domain name registrar based in USA.”

They cal-in to inform me that one of their customer has an immediate interest in one of our domain name. They want to make an offer for the domain name I bought few months ago just for $9.25.

If the deal works out well I should be getting over $10,000 for domain name I bought for $9.25 less than 4months ago. I doubt I can get such return from stock market or penny stock. lol

It is no more news that poor internet service is one of the major problem Nigerian internet users (either for business or personal use) are fighting with everyday. 8 years ago I read in Nigeria’s no1 motivation and business opportunity magazine - Success Digest Magazine (now Success Digest Extra) that their will be a seminar on how to tap into internet opportunity. That was the first time I heard about ‘internet’. I don’t know what it is then.
